Description

Just before her death from an unknown ailment at the age of twenty-two, Lucca Elaine Ashtear--known only to posterity as Doctor LEA--left a basket on the front steps of Guardia Castle with instructions for the care of her two most precious creations: a prototype 'time egg,' a mysterious device with untold potential--and her infant son, Falcen.

Falcen was a half-blooded avian neiphiti (grus neiphitus, according to Dr. LEA's notes.) He was adopted by Princess Nadia and her husband Crono, who raised him alongside their son, Terrel. His natural mother died before he was a year old, and his father's identity was never known.

He didn't particularly take after any of his parents, although as a neiphiti he inherited the gi'ira and his mother's gift for fire magic. He had a surly disposition and a hot temper, and his rivalry with his adoptive brother as well as bitterness towards his unorthodox origin led him to run away from home at the age of fourteen. For nearly twenty years he roamed the world as a bounty hunter, making his living on the wind. His bird-like wings were fully functional and gave him the unique advantage of flight, something he used to get the drop on unsuspecting bounties.

When the southern nation of Porre stormed Guardia Castle in 1038 AD, Falcen returned home at long last, putting differences aside to fly to the aid of the only family he truly knew. Unfortunately, his contribution to the battle was in vain; the castle defenders were overwhelmed, Crono and Terrel were slain at the gates by the advancing army, and Queen Nadia was mortally wounded alongside her archers. According to the legend that followed, in his grief and rage Falcen fell upon the Porre army with a vengeance, slaughtering over thirty of their ranks. He then knelt before the fallen queen and, with arcane powers hitherto unknown to him, restored her life at the expense of his own.

The witnessing Porre soldiers were so in awe of Falcen's feat that they spared Queen Nadia's life. Once she surrendered and her kingdom was subjugated, Nadia was allowed to spend the rest of her days as a ward of the state, residing under supervision on an estate once owned by her father, the late King Guardia XXXIII. Rumors claim that she refused to abide such captivity for long, and she fled into obscurity.

Upon his sacrifice, Falcen's body was reduced to ash and the feathers of his wings scattered to the corners of the earth. These relics were treasured for their miraculous healing properties, and were called phoenix pinions after the mythical creature credited with the power of rebirth. Once expended, a pinion would also turn to dust, and as of the twenty-first century it is said that only one in the world remains: the one kept by Queen Nadia.

No one knows where Nadia or the pinion ultimately disappeared, nor was Dr. LEA's time egg ever found...

---

Not exactly a happy ending for the Guardia line, but for the Ellichronrisen, Bahamut's chosen, the story never ends.
